Capabilities Equality

Capabilities Equality
The capabilities approach to equality, developed by Amartyr Sen egalitarian theory and Martha Nussbaum, seeks to answer the question, what is a proper measure of a person`s condition for the purposes of determining what we owe each other, as a matter of justice? While the capabilities theory has avoided many of the conceptual difficulties that have undermined competing accounts of egalitarian justice, recent criticisms have raised questions regarding the focus, structure egalitarian theory and justification of the theory. In this volume, leading scholars present new egalitarian theory and original essays that address these controversies. The authors connect issues of egalitarian justice to practical political concerns, identify the strength egalitarian theory and weaknesses of the capabilities account of egalitarian justice egalitarian theory and finally seek to realize real progress in the understanding of distributive justice. This accessible volume will be essential reading for all scholars with an interest in distributive justice egalitarian theory and for students egalitarian theory and researchers studying moralphilosophy, social theory egalitarian theory and political theory. Game Theory and the Social Contract

Game Theory and the Social Contract
In Volume 1 of Game Theory egalitarian theory and the Social Contract, Ken Binmore restated the problems of moral egalitarian theory and political philosophy in the language of game theory. In Volume 2, Just Playing, he unveils his own controversial theory, which abandons the metaphysics of Immanuel Kant for the naturalistic approach to morality of David Hume. According to this viewpoint, a fairness norm is a convention that evolved to coordinate behavior on an equilibrium of a society`s Game of Life. This approach allows Binmore to mount an evolutionary defense of Rawls`s original position that escapes the utilitarian conclusions that follow when orthodox reasoning is applied with the traditional assumptions. Using ideas borrowed from the theory of bargaining egalitarian theory and repeated games, Binmore is led instead to a form of egalitarianism that vindicates the intuitions that led Rawls to write his Theory of Justice. Written for an interdisciplinary audience, Just Playing offers a panoramic tour through a range of new egalitarian theory and disturbing insights that game theory brings to anthropology, biology, economics, philosophy, egalitarian theory and psychology. It is essential reading for anyone who thinks it likely that ethics evolved along with the human species. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
